Business: going green in a recession?

Is going green in a recession possible? Green companies are more efficient than their competitors and usually have more loyal customers.

Increased efficiency

Going green in a recession is possible because a green business is more efficient overall than a conventional one.

This is because they take steps to reduce their energy consumption as a way of protecting the environment.  This has the added benefit of saving money, which in some cases can be a lot.

Electricity

Electricity prices are constantly on the increase.  A green business will reduce their consumption as much as possible by:

  • Using energy efficient light bulbs
  • Installing thermostats
  • Switching off all electrical equipment at night

HVAC

Simple improvements to heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) can save a business a lot of money.  Upgrading or installing new efficient systems may cost money to begin with, but it will save money in the long run.

Improved ventilation has the added benefit of increasing productivity in the workplace because employees will be working with better air quality.

Water

A green business will also save large sums of money from reduced water consumption.  Water prices are rising too, largely because of increased demand.  Green businesses will reduce their consumption by:

  • Motion sensors in urinals
  • Dual flush toilets
  • Timers on taps

These simple changes easily pay for the cost of installation in a short period of time.  This means that down the line there are big savings to be made, which is important in a recession.  Operating as efficiently as possible means green businesses can spread their budget further.

Increased customer loyalty

Consumers are more eco-conscious than ever before and actively seek out green businesses for their purchases and services.

Increased sales

A green business will increase sales by having a loyal customer base. As times become tougher customers are more inclined to make responsible purchases with their money.

If they need to make a purchase they may use a business with green credentials as they feel their money is going to environmental causes.  This makes going green in a recession attractive to many businesses.

Having a loyal customer base helps these green businesses continue to make sales during a recession.  This in turn also helps them to overtake competitors in the same niche as other companies may not have such loyal customers.

Going green in a recession is possible

Recessions are hard for any business.  However a green business has a good chance of surviving through the worst because they don’t waste any resources.  This means they have more money which they can either pump back into the business to increase productivity or use to market their green message.
