Magnesium sulfate, more commonly known as Epsom salt is a versatile, naturally occurring substance which has been used for decades as a natural treatment for a number of ailments and conditions of the skin, hair, muscles and more. Nowadays, celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham are swearing by Epsom salts as a perfect all-round pampering ingredient. Here are just a few uses for Epsom salts- an inexpensive and natural product great for pampering and making yourself feel fabulous. You’ll never want your bathroom cabinet to go without them again!
Thanks to their gritty texture, Epsom salts make a perfect exfoliator, ideal for removing hard or dead skin from tired feet. Soak your feet in warm water before rubbing with a handful of salts, then rinse and soak for 20 minutes. A long foot soak will have the additional benefits of removing foot odours and relieving aches and pains, so try it to help wind down after a long walk or a hard day at work.
Sprains, bruises and aches
Epsom salts aren’t like your average sea salts. When absorbed through the skin, they work to draw toxins from the body, relieving the swelling of sprains, bruises and other general aches. Add 2 cups of Epsom salts to a warm bath and soak to relieve the pain of sprains and aching muscles as well as the appearance of bruises.
Sunburnt skin can be soothed with a natural after-sun lotion made from Epsom salts. Dissolve a tablespoon of Epsom salts into half a cup of warm water and allow to cool. Keep in a spray bottle and spray onto sunburnt, irritated, itchy or tight skin to leave it feeling soothed and cool.
A splinter can be painful and irritating when trapped under your skin. Just as Epsom salts draw out toxins from the body, they can also be used to soften the skin and draw out foreign objects. Simply add a cup of Epsom salts to warm water and soak the affected area. After a few minutes, the area will soften and the splinter should loosen, making it easier to extract.
Greasy or oily hair can be instantly given new life with the help of Epsom salts, by working to absorb excess grease. Add 9 tablespoons to half a cup of your usual shampoo. Work a small amount of the liquid through your hair whilst it is still dry and rinse with cold water. Follow by rinsing with apple cider vinegar to improve shine and leave your hair feeling extra clean. The mixture can be kept for a few weeks and used every time your hair feels excessively oily.
Not only do Epsom salts do wonders for greasy hair, they can also be used to boost volume in hair which is looking a bit lacklustre. Take your usual conditioner, or treat yourself to one which is extra deep and nourishing, and add equal parts conditioner and Epsom salts to a pan. Warm slowly and add the mixture to dry hair. Leave to work for 20 minutes before rinsing out. You should find your hair is instantly moisturised and feeling more bouncy and voluminous.
The uses for Epsom salts aren’t restricted to caring for you on the outside, they are also great at naturally fixing internal problems. A teaspoon of Epsom salts dissolved in a glass of water is an effective laxative which draws water to the bowels, helping to settle a bloated stomach or constipation.
If you’ve overindulged on a night out, Epsom salts are a great way of restoring balance in your body and expelling the toxins caused by the breakdown of alcohol in the body. A long soak in an Epsom salt bath will help to ease any muscle pain while giving your energy a boost. A teaspoon of salts dissolved in a glass of water will also help to draw out toxins, helping you to rehydrate more quickly.
Bathing in Epsom salts is said to be an effective weight loss aid by drawing out excess toxins. They can also be used to treat constipation and bloating which can in turn help to promote healthier bowels which can speed up the loss of weight. Reduced bloating can help to create a flatter stomach as well as reducing skin puffiness and cellulite, which can lead to an overall more slender and streamlined figure.
