England has many great organic restaurants.  This article will look at 3 in particular.  With a little research you will more than likely find a local organic restaurant in your town or city.

More restaurateurs are making the decision to open new, or change into, organic restaurants.  Organic food is a good way of reducing the environmental impact of food production.

Organic food:

  • Protects soil ecosystems
  • Uses no damaging chemicals
  • Sequesters CO2

The Duke of Cambridge, London

The Duke of Cambridge is one of the best organic restaurants in England.  All their food produce is Soil Association certified.  To get this certification the Duke has to record every item they sell and are subject to random inspections.  More information can be found here.

Organic food:

The Duke is helping the environment by only choosing organic food produce.  It is healthier for the consumer as it is more nutritious than produce from conventional farms.

Organic food is free of:

  • Hydrogenated fats
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Artificial colourings
  • Monosodium glutamate

Terre A Terre, Brighton:

Terre a Terre is one of the best vegetarian restaurants in England.  It is also one of the best organic restaurants because of their commitment to selling organic drinks.  Many restaurants will just focus on organic food and forget that drinks can also be organic.

 Organic Wine:

Organic wines are healthier.  There are no chemical fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides used in production.  This produces better grapes and maintains the vine’s health..

Some other organic drinks Terre a Terre sell are; Cognac, Calvados, Armagnac, Port, Gin, Rum, Vodka, Sherries, Liquors, Cider and Beer. This is one of the most comprehensive organic drinks menus in England.

Barley Wood Walled Garden, Somerset

Barley Wood is one of England’s great organic restaurants.  This is because they grow many vegetables, which they sell in their restaurant The Ethicurean or sold to the public.

Home growing:

Organic restaurants that grow their own produce are limiting their environmental impact.  Food miles are reduced to almost nothing, and the small scales of allotments uses less water and energy consumption.

The kitchen garden at Barley Wood is open for the public all year.  They can buy produce or go into the restaurant and eat it there.  They also attend farmers markets.

With more restaurateurs choosing to run organic eateries it is likely there could be one near you.  When you go out for a meal, choose an organic restaurant.  You will get healthier and tastier food.  You will also help reduce the impact the food industry has on the environment.

When looking for organic restaurants do some research:

  • Are they soil association certified?
  • Can they say exactly where all their food is from?
  • Do they grow their own produce?
  • Are any of their drinks organic?

If the restaurant you want to visit has no website simply call them up and ask as many questions as possible until you are satisfied they are organic.
